The best view of the statue is from across the river along IL Route 2. This majestic image of an American Indian gazing over Rock River stands 48 feet tall. A tribute to Native Americans, created by notable sculptor Lorado Taft, this statue seems to come to life when the sun is setting, but any time of the day is a great time to admire this beautiful piece of art.
Hailed as a testament to mechanical and engineering skill, as well as an artistic masterpiece, the iconic statue in Lowden Park was dedicated in June 1911. Its construction required the use of 412 barrels of Portland Cement; 238 yards of concrete, and two tons of pink granite chips for the outside covering. It is listed on the National Historic Register. It's official name is "Eternal Indian", but is most commonly known by the name Blackhawk.
