Roadways as we know them didn't come about until the beginning of the last century. They were often poorly maintained, random and disconnected, but in 1913 the Lincoln Highway became the first transcontinental highway. Now the Illinois segment of the Lincoln highway is a National Scenic Byway. Travel along this historic route and visit the many wonderful little communities along it to see what they have to offer. See the interpretive gazebos and murals that tell about the significance the Lincoln Highway played in travel as we know it today!
The H.I. Lincoln Building in Franklin Grove houses the national headquarters and interpretive center of the Lincoln Highway Association. It's open weekdays 10-4 pm; Saturdays 10am - 4pm and Sundays noon to 4pm.
